ROEL® CONSTRUCTIONPresents Alpine Challenge Charity Bike Ride
San Diego, CA… For nearly a century ROEL Construction Company has been involved in community service throughout San Diego. Last September 2008, Wayne Hickey, ROEL CEO along with event chair Ed Paul presented Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation (www.chsd.org) with a check for $15,000 to help continue the support of their mission “to restore, sustain and enhance the health and developmental potential of children through excellence in care, education, research and advocacy.” The remaining proceeds went to the Alpine Kiwanis College Scholarship Fund that provided two college sponsorships to eligible high school students. Because the event's committee and ride day personnel are all volunteers, 100 percent of the proceeds benefit the Funds.
This year marks the ninth anniversary of the event and in that time the ride has grown from a mere 70+ riders to over 600 in 2008 and over $135,000 in cash contributions to the funds. Andy Hampsten, winner of the 1988 Giro d’Italia and the Alpe d’Huez stage of the 1992 Tour de France, is back this year for a second ride for participants to look forward to keeping pace with again. To accommodate the growing number or riders, the headquarters has been relocated to the Viejas Outlet Center's concert park area.
“Viejas is proud to be hosting the Alpine Challenge headquarters. It’s a wonderful community event that benefits great causes. It’s a natural partnership because our Tribe shares ROEL’s commitment to the health and education of our entire community. We look forward to continuing this partnership for many years,” said Viejas Tribal Chairman Bobby Barrett.
The Alpine Challenge (www.alpinechallenge.com) is an annual charity bike event that offers three rides, with 25- 60- and 72- mile courses throughout Alpine and the surrounding areas. The Alpine Challenge Volunteer Committee encourages cycling enthusiasts to experience this worthy cause this Saturday, April 25, 2009.
“In times of economic uncertainty, it is more important than ever to support our community however we can. Here at ROEL, we encourage people to give of their time or talent if they’re unable to make financial contributions,” said cyclist and ROEL CEO Wayne Hickey. ROEL employees will man all the SAG stops along the ride, which provide food, water, and rest to the participants in the ride.
